Task 2

I agree that music magazines tend to appeal to males..

Evidence that Q appeals more to males
·        Front Cover Image- harsh, ‘in your face’ (looking directly at the camera). Most of the time male artist are used however when female artists are presented, they are portrayed as a sexual icon (not as a role model to females). Unwelcoming expressions – not smiling, serious, angry, moody. Unattractive male- therefore does not appeal to females.
·        Aggressive Language- ‘Kick off’ – violent, cruel, unsympathetic (males come across as the more ruthless genders). ‘Madness, mayhem’- strong words, chaotic atmosphere (to the point) – wouldn’t appeal to females as they are calm whereas males are messy, unorganised characters. The title ‘Q’- younger audiences might not be able to understand the meaning it/ what type of magazine this is.
·        Aggressive Bold Font- Title ‘Q’ is presented in a simple font which won’t appeal to younger audiences. Other headings and sell lines across the cover are normally in capital letters (harsh, you can’t miss it)- sometimes comes across as shouting which wouldn’t appeal to females as females are polite, caring, gentle ect.
·        Colours- not very colourful (quite plain so won’t attract younger audiences, especially females). Main colour is red which is harsh, bold. Also uses black a lot- dark colour which attracts males.
·        Sell Line Fonts – Yet again very simple, like the headline. Uses simple colours and fonts – people are clearly more interested to what the sell line is actually saying to how it is presented. The use of dark colours such a black coveys how  the cover is mainly aimed at males.

Evidence that Kerrang appeals to both genders
·        Scruffy Heading – Appeals to males- boys are messy characters and are less likely to care about their appearance then girls are. Title ‘Kerrang’ has an edgy look therefore links to the music genre the magazine is about – this will persuade both male and female music fans who are interested in this type of music. The style of ‘Kerrang’ is more interesting than the title ‘Q’ which will attract a wider range of audiences (more characters so more males AND females).
·        Images of Male Artists – characters are more cheeky then aggressive (so are less serious and more fun). However the artists also never tend to smile- normally have more weirder, abnormal expressions which is more humorous so both males and females will find it funny and enjoy the comedy side of the magazine.
·        Colours – Always use contrasting colours, are quite colourful- different colours attract a wider audience ( black, blue, red  appeals to males. White, pink, yellow appeals to females).
·        Free Posters – will appeal more to females as they are more likely to have posters up on their walls of their music icons or to make their bedroom look pretty/appealing to suit their character. Females would also use posters of male artists as they may find them attractive (same for males towards female artists). Although females are more likely to have female artists on their bedroom (as their inspiration) then males are to have of male artists.
·        Sell line Fonts –‘Kerrang’ have many which makes the cover look busy, hectic, messy. Having a range of different sell lines will appeal to both males and females as some may appeal to a certain gender more than others. Sell lines are mostly in bold capital letters which makes the magazine look more straight- forward, to the point and informative

Evidence that TOTP appeals to females
·        Colours – Always uses pink on the front cover (pink is associated with females). Covers are often very colourful and busy. Often uses two main colours that contrast each other well. (Also uses purple, yellow, light blue, orange which are quite girly colours).
·        Free Posters – Sometimes include pictures of the posters inside the magazine (normally of male artists, boy bands and women who are role models to the target audience). The attractive male artists and members of the boy bands will appeal to the female audience because of their good looks. Females are more likely to stick posters of their idols up onto their walls (including a mixture of female and male artist/celebrities) unlike males.
·        Free gift – these certain free gifts include make-up or girly accessories that will appeal to females (especially the younger girls who will be new to make-up products so will appreciate a small make-up gift). Younger audiences will be excited towards free gifts as they would see it as one of the main aspects or buying the magazine (they may even enjoy the idea of getting the free gift more than the actual magazine).
·        Girly Heading – Frequently uses pink as part of the main headline (will appeal to females and catch their attention as the name of the magazine is one of the main aspects on the cover).
·        Images Used – The front cover is normally of a successful pop artist or icon that wil be popular around the time of the magazine’s release. Many different girl pop stars are presented on the front cover with much of their outfit on display or will be wearing a particular accessory – this type of presentation will persuade girls to buy the magazine if they are interested in fashion or like the way the artist looks (they may inspire to look like them). The same thing also applies for males however male artists or actors on the front cover are normally considered to be attractive- this way they can appeal to the female audience. Each celebrity on the front cover is normally smiling, expressing happy emotions – this portrays the music genre. Many images of other celebrities are also presented to target a wider range of audiences.

Mock Exam - Task 3

Looking for a new popular music magazine?...then look no futher! 'Pop Icon' is the perfect magazine for you! Not only does my magazine include all the aspects you are searching for such as an engaging title, it also supplies the features a proffesional music magazine needs which will send copies flying off the shelves!

Engagaing Title

First of all I would like to discuss my ideas for the magazine title. I have chosen to go with 'Pop Icon' which I think cleverly portrays what my magazine is all about. Of course the word 'Pop' demonstrates that this magazine is about music as it expresses a particular genre. Anyone would be able to tell this is a pop magazine just from the title! The word 'icon' also describes the magazine's purpose to include music inspirations who my target audience look up to which gives a positive message of the music industry. I believe this is important as the music industry is normally displayed negatively and inappropriate to young audiences. I also think my title is catchy and simple which I hope you can agree with.

House Style

I will also include an iconic pop artist on each cover to carry out a particular theme which will make my magazine recognisable. For each release, I will use the same colour scheme (pink and blue) and the same style font. I reckon using the same style for each magazine will attract my target audience and make it easier for them to look for my magazine.

Regular Features

Throughout my magazine I will include certain features such as competitions (to concerts/ to meet artists), album/single releases and reviews, tour reviews, top 10 lists, posters, fan reviews, upcoming artists and ‘Scrapbooks’. For my ‘Scrapbook’ feature I will include many photos of a particular event (such as a festival or concert). This will please my readers as it will supply them with many exclusive pictures if they missed it! How will this specific feature be different to the other magazines I hear you ask! Well, I believe this is a unique feature that hasn’t been used before so will give us an advantage to beat our most respective competitor ‘Top Of The Pops’. Fan reviews is also another feature which I believe will help the reader interact more with the magazine by giving their own opinions towards today’s latest music.

Target Audience

I have decided my target audience will be female pop fans around 14-22. I believe this age range will appeal to my magazine as not only will they connect with the pop artists on the front cover and look up to them, they will also look forward to the exclusive interviews and competitions available to for the older audience (eg. Festivals, concerts ect). Teenagers and younger adults also use the majority of their time on the internet so by having my own website, twitter and facebook for my magazine is absolutely vital! I also believe that £2.49 is a suitable price range for my audience as it is affordable as some of my readers might even have a job.

Why Music Fans Buy Music Magazines

There may be many different reasons to why people still continue to purchase music magazines, as even though they are probably not the most well-known magazines in the world, they still provide lots of information for music fans.
One of the main reasons why fans buy these types of magazines would be for all the fantastic competitions; ranging from winning signed abulms and singles to winning the chance to go to a popular festival and getting to meet your favourite artists. Of course these competitions are different, depending on what type of music genre magazine you buy. For rock/heavy metal types of magazines, the most likely thing you could win would be a popular festival suited to your genre however for pop music magazines, a big event such as Summer Time Ball or the exclusive chance to meet your favourite artist would be expected. The other thing music magazines are possibly most famous for are the reviews they include about new song releases, music videos and albums. Music fans may enjoy these reviews as they are more professional then perhaps normal magazines and newspapers because they are coming from an actual music magazine. Not only do music magazines present reviews about music, some also write about DVDs, books and recently released films. This could cover a wider range of audiences as it includes something for everyone. Music magazines may also include courage of key events such as popular gigs or popular concerts in a particular music genre's history which will become of great interest to music fans.
Almost every music magazine will also contain a current download list to find out what's in the charts so fans can know what everyone is listening to and what is popular in the music industry at the moment. These may also differ depending on what music genre magazine you purchase. For example, rock magazines may include a current download list for rock music so each type of magazine can please their particular music fans.
Another thing that is also very useful for music fans is the concert avertisements that music magazines present as they can find out how much, when and where upcoming gigs are. Music magazine may also be able to give special offers which involve being able to get discount on tickets.
Latest news from particular artists also cover main articles in music magazines as they contain interviews of some of the music fans' favourite artists. Some of the news (including behind the scenes gossip) may also be about films or other famous celebrities so there is something suitable for everyone.
One of the more unique information music magazines provide is that you can find out about new music stars before anyone else has. Some music press can boost artist's careers (like 'Alternative Press' magazine did with 'Red Hot Chili Peppers' and 'Fall Out Boy'). This means bands can be touted as the next big thing before they've even released a recording.

Music Video Review

Justin Bieber - 'Beauty And A Beat' ft Nicki Minaj

Normal artists like to premiere their new videos through TV shows, music channels or even radio stations. However, Justin Bieber takes the release of his brand new music video to a completely different level...The young star played a prank on all his fans by announcing his laptop had been stolen and personal footage had been released by a hacker (although this impressive stunt was just leading up to the release of his new single 'Beauty And A Beat')
Even though the release of Justin's video was particularly clever, the music video itself is also very unique ; giving a whole different view towards the music industry. 'Beauty And A Beat' has a DIY look about it as most of the video is personally shot by the one and only Justin Bieber. Throughout the video, the camera is constantly being turned around to face the star as he walks around an eventful pool party which includes dancers and even synchronized swimmers. However, at the beginning of the video, you can tell the type of prank Justin was trying to set up as a few clips of exclusive video footage is shown before the music kicks in and the official video starts.
Many typical music videos are known for how high-budget they are and their clever effects however for Justin's new video, this doesn't seem to be the case. Justin continues to film the video with an  ordinary camera and films like a typical home or blogger's video would be shot. During the video, Justin continues to sing his new track until he reaches Nicki Minaj by the pool who does a short rap before he starts singing again. The video doesn't include any acting like normal music videos would, just the star smiling which is exactly how his fans aprove of him! Even though the video is quite out of the ordinary, Justin does include one thing which is quite normal to be witnessed in his previous videos; his dancing.
This intelligent and original idea definitely shows off how creative some artists can be. Especially as the video was written, directed and filmed by Justin, no one can deney that the boy has talent. The song itself is very catchy and with a fantastic video like that, it's no wonder it already has over 20 million views in it's first week of release!

Single Review

Lawson-'Taking Over Me'

Compared to Lawson's first single; 'When She Was Mine', 'Taking Over Me' is much more up-beat and expresses a lot more positivity then the last break-up ballad they released. Considering this is only the band's second single, it definetly produces the type of pop material needed to make the charts. The band's first single secured an impressive 4th place in the charts so who says Lawson cannot continue their success? Especially that in my opinion, 'Taking Over Me' is even better then the debut single. The lead singer Andy Brown continues to show off his unique talent through his lyrics (which have been revealed to be about ex-girlfriend Mollie King from 'the Saturdays') by expressing a positive outlook of a relationship. Not only are the lyrics up to scratch, the melody and catchy chorus have also proven to give the song a classic rock-pop sound which is what the band is all about. The band explain that this song is complete opposite to their first single as 'Taking Over Me' is about the positive start to a new relationship, not a heartbreak from the past...
The new British band have continued to produced great music as 'Taking Over Me' gives off happy vibes a classic summer anthem needs and is sure to be a hit.

Album Review

Album Review- The Wanted 'Battleground'

'Battleground' is the boys second album to date and is filled with pop classics and songs ranging from extremly slow ballads to up-beat dance tracks.
The album includes their top single 'Glad You Came' which went triple platinum in America and straight to number one in the UK. Their other popular singles 'Lightening' and comic relief single 'Gold Forever' also feature on the album. However 'Warzone' (which is their latest single to be presented on the album) was one of their only singles to be co-written by two of the band members; Nathan Sykes and Max George. With other boybands such as JLS and One Direction in the charts, it is sometimes hard for The Wanted to have a unique selling point in the music industry although 'Battleground' features songs with a much more edgier sounding then your everyday pop song. 'Lie To Me' is a great example of this and 'Last To Know' is also another slightly darker midtempo track with emotional lyrics. Nearly every song on the album is fairly catchy, while the ballads prove that the boys have great vocals.
Overall, the album contains a mixture of songs which continue to show off their elctro-pop sound and will not disappoint.
